Last H.P. Lovecraft filmfest in PDX this weekend

The rumors are sadly true -- this weekend will be the LAST HPLFF in Portland -- it will live on in its new Los Angeles incarnation.... join us fellow fans of the macabre and say farewell to one of PDX's creepiest good times.

H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival "The only festival that understands" -- October 1-2-3, 2010, Hollywood Theatre, Portland Oregon

From the website: The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival promotes the works of H.P. Lovecraft, literary horror, and weird tales through the cinematic adaptations by professional and amateur filmmakers. The festival was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore in the hope that H.P. Lovecraft would be rightly recognized as a master of gothic horror and his work more faithfully adapted to film and television.

Day pass - Friday $15, Sat and Sun $18 - Weekend pass $46

Check the HPLFF website for updates as they become available for featured films, special guests, vendors and ticket sales.

Comix lust and 'Boilerplate', part 2

So following up on the last post, it looks like 'Boilerplate' creators Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett will be at next year's Rose City Comicon, September 10-11, 2011 at the Oregon Convention Center.

I'm looking forward to this event. A few years ago I enjoyed attending Seattle's Emerald City ComiCon, but I'm lazy and would love to see a real Con happen right here in comicentric PDX.

I drove north back then mostly to see writer and artist Dan Brereton, whose gorgeous and distinctive work is so much fun in his gothy 'Nocturnals' series. What's not to like about characters with names like Doc Horror, and The Gunwitch, "who lurk in the night and fight crime in Pacific City."

During the obligatory autograph collecting at Brereton's table, I mentioned my only complaint as a fan was how long a wait there was between his published projects. He explained that since he works in watercolor, his illustrations take longer to produce. Worth the wait, I'd say. His comix are painterly and expressive, with a visual depth and pop that only layers of watercolor can create. (insert fangirl sigh here)

"The robot's fate remains a mystery..."

Came across a post today that 'Boilerplate', the Victorian-robot-and-comic creation of artist Paul Guinan, will be made into a movie by JJ Abrams, the fellow who produced the film 'Cloverfield', among others, as well as a buncha TV shows like 'Lost' and 'Fringe'.

Potentially cool on a couple of levels. There's the Portland, Oregon, connection -- Paul Guinan lives here (somewhere on or near Hawthorne, I think.) And of course it'll be quintessentially Steampunk... a goodie for steamers, goths, and lovers of the Victorian aesthetic.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Undead

'Bout ready to step out to see "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Undead" at the Hollywood Theater. Here's a synopsis swiped from the website : "Julian Marsh (Hoffman) is an out of work ladies man who lands a job directing a bizarre adaption of Hamlet. After casting his best friend (Lemche) and his ex-girlfriend (Aoki) in the show, Julian finds himself in the middle of a two thousand year old conspiracy that explains the connection between Shakespeare, the Holy Grail and some seriously sexy vampires..."

What happened to tribe.net?

When Portland Goth started on Tribe on July 1, 2005, the site's interface seemed simple, the camaraderie was noticeable, the exchange of information and ideas was timely and useful.

I met some lovely people there who shared an interest in Portland's alterna-side: the clubnights, concerts, films and comix... tattoos and cemetery tours... fashion shows and dungeon parties... CthulhuCons and hearse cruise-ins....

Do a google on the demise of Tribe, and you'll find several frequent user complaints. The Wikipedia entry probably sums them up best (though without all the "WTF?!?" sentiments): The decision to censor content. The layout changes. The staff layoffs. And the outright bugginess and sketchy functionality.

So I've decided to experiment with this, a new home for Portland Goth.

I'll probably continue parallel posting on tribe.net for a while -- I'm a loyal sort, and frankly the Portland Goth tribe got a few kudos. (The Dark Side of the Net's admin was kind enough once to remark that the PG tribe was one of the few goth sites that actually stays updated. But ultimately even The Dark Side had to make the move to the blogosphere in 2009.)

Look for PDX happenings, banter and the usual suspects.
